Why Minerals for your Deodorant — Not Aluminium or Sodium Bicarbonate

If you’ve tried switching to natural deodorant before and ended up irritated, disappointed, or confused — you’re not alone.

Most people don’t realise that how a deodorant works matters just as much as what it’s made from.

At Migasoka Farm, we chose gentle minerals for a reason — and we intentionally left out aluminium salts and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Here’s why.

First: Sweat Isn’t the Problem

Sweat itself doesn’t smell.
Odour happens when bacteria break down sweat, creating acidic by-products.

So the goal isn’t to stop sweat completely — it’s to:

  • Reduce odour-causing bacteria

  • Support healthy skin

  • Let the body do what it’s meant to do

Why We Don’t Use Aluminium

Aluminium salts are used in antiperspirants, not deodorants.

They work by:

  • Forming temporary plugs in sweat ducts

  • Reducing or stopping perspiration

While this is effective at keeping skin dry, it can also:

  • Disrupt the skin’s natural function

  • Cause irritation for sensitive skin

  • Lead to rebound sweating once stopped

We chose not to block sweat.
Instead, we support the skin’s natural balance.

Why We Don’t Use Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda)

Baking soda is common in natural deodorants — but it’s also the number one reason people react.

Here’s why:

  • Baking soda is highly alkaline

  • Underarm skin is naturally slightly acidic

  • This pH mismatch can damage the skin barrier

For many people, this shows up as:

  • Redness

  • Burning or itching

  • Darkened underarms

  • Persistent irritation that worsens over time

Even “low-bicarb” formulas can cause issues with daily use.

If your skin has ever felt sore or inflamed from a natural deodorant — baking soda was likely the culprit.

Why We Choose Gentle Minerals Instead

We use skin-compatible minerals that work with your body, not against it.

Minerals like zinc:

  • Help neutralise odour-causing bacteria

  • Calm irritation and inflammation

  • Support sensitive or freshly shaved skin

  • Do not alter the skin’s natural pH

They don’t stop sweat — they simply prevent the conditions that cause odour.

This makes them ideal for:

  • Sensitive skin

  • Hormonal changes

  • Teens

  • Anyone transitioning away from antiperspirants

A Deodorant That Respects Your Skin

Bare Underarm Balm is:

  • Aluminium-free

  • Baking soda-free

  • Fragrance-free

  • Designed for daily, long-term use

It’s not about overpowering your body or forcing it to behave differently.

It’s about balance, comfort, and trust.

If You’re New to Mineral Deodorant

Your body may take a short adjustment period — especially if you’re switching from an antiperspirant.

This doesn’t mean it’s “not working”.
It means your skin is re-learning its natural rhythm.

Stick with it.
Your underarms will thank you.

In simple terms:

We don’t believe your body needs to be blocked, masked, or punished.

We believe it needs support.

That’s why we choose minerals.
